Self-drive tour in Denmark
This self-drive tour in Denmark is a good choice if you want to visit some of the most popular family attractions.
This tour starts in Copenhagen and ends in Billund in Jutland.
Plan your family holiday in Denmark depending on the season, how many days, and from where you arrive. Distances between experiences in Denmark are short, and it’s easy to organise car hire.
You find world-famous amusement parks in Denmark, like Tivoli and Legoland, but you can also go in the footsteps of H.C. Andersen at Funen.
What about visiting the famous Legoland in Jutland, where the whole Lego Imperium started or discovering a tremendous cultural experience at "Hamlet`s" Kronborg Castle in North Zealand.
Throughout Denmark, you will find various cosy family accommodations, restaurants, efficient services and welcoming staff.
Here is a suggestion for a self-drive tour if you arrive in Copenhagen, which is very easy to reach by flight from other international airports.
Day 1 - Wonderful Copenhagen
Copenhagen is famous for outnumbering cars, as shown by many well-developed biking lanes and one of the world's longest pedestrian streets (Strøget).
Copenhagen covers all interests, from cosy cafés & restaurants to funny street artist performers, small art galleries, and some first-rate museums and shopping.
For active visitors, you can easily rent a bike and take your private sightseeing. Don't miss the world-famous Tivoli Gardens Amusement Park, Amalienborg Palace and Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid statue.

Day 2 - Visit Royal North Zealand
The next day you pick up your hired car from the car rental station and start your tour by driving north along the beautiful Danish Riviera coastline.
You enter the North Zealand region covered by woodlands, open landscapes and varied coastlines. Here you also find many impressive castles and manors like Kronborg 'Hamlet' Castle and Frederiksborg Palace, which you can visit along the way. During the summer, the beautiful beaches invite you for a break, and you will find well-developed playgrounds for kids.

Day 3 - In the footsteps of the Vikings
You start the day in the footsteps of the famous Danish Viking warriors by visiting the most famous Danish Viking Museum in Roskilde. The museum presents themed activities for children and adults. In summer, sailing on a replica ship on the Roskilde fjord is possible. Nearby you find one of the attractions on the UNESCO Heritage list, the Roskilde Cathedral.
After lunchtime, you drive to Funen by passing the impressive Great Belt Bridge. Funen, the third-largest of Denmark's islands, is located in the middle of the country.
The island is also known as Denmark's garden for its fruit trees and vegetable fields. Denmark´s most famous writer Hans Christian Andersen was born here and got inspired by the countryside.
On your way to your final destination Odense, Andersen`s childhood town, you stop at Egeskov Castle. The castle and grounds are filled with wonders, including three mazes, a motorcycle- and a classic car exhibition, a tree-top walk, a unique collection of dresses and an old smithy.
You can stay at: City Hotel in Odense
Day 4 - H.C. Andersen experiences
Start your day by walking to the nearby H.C. Andersen Museum. The Tinderbox is a part of the museum, invites kids to perform and wear the costumes from Andersen`s fairy tales, and the museum arranges fairy tale plays for the kids.
After lunch, in one of Odense`s many cosy cafes or restaurants, you can download the developed H.C. Andersen app on your mobile, and follow Andersen Odense's footsteps.
You're ending the day by driving to Billund in Southern Jutland, the hometown of Legoland.
Stay at: Hotel Svanen in Billund
Day 5 - Visit the original Legoland in Billund
Enjoy your last day in Denmark by visiting Legoland. Visit the city created from Lego blocks and try all the other attractions for the entire family.
This original Legoland opened in 1968 and is located in Billund in Jutland. Just nearby Legoland, you can see the first Lego® factory. The company started here more than 80 years ago.
