Visit South Iceland
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of the natural beauty highlights in Iceland.
The lagoon was created 80 years ago, and it is the biggest gletcher lagoon in the country and the most famous one. Located in the southern end of the gletcher Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park og Höfn just nearby Ring road 1.
The glacier lagoon is 1,5 km long and the surroundings of beautiful picturesque icebergs, amazing colours and pure clean nature is an extra ordinary experience. The icebergs calve from Breiðamerkurjökull, an offshoot of Vatnajökull, crashing down into the water and drifting inexorably towards the Atlantic Ocean.
They can spend up to five years floating in the 25-sq-km-plus, 260m-deep lagoon, melting, refreezing and occasionally toppling over with a mighty splash, startling the birds. They then move on via Jökulsá, Iceland’s shortest river, out to sea.
Here you can take on a organized lagoon tour, get closer to the rough nature than you never believed, and taste the ice from 1000 years old lagoon. Maybe you are lucky to get a picture of a seal too.
