Languages in Iceland

It has retained many archaic features and is considered one of the most conservative languages in the Germanic language family.

Icelandic is the native language of the Icelandic people and is the primary language used in all aspects of daily life, including government, education, media, and business. The language is known for its complex grammar, including a unique case system, noun declensions, and verb conjugations.

While Icelandic is the dominant language, many Icelanders also speak English as a second language, especially in urban areas and tourism-related industries. English is widely taught in schools, and it is the most commonly used foreign language in Iceland.

English is generally sufficient for communication for travellers visiting Iceland, especially in tourist areas and popular destinations. However, learning a few basic phrases in Icelandic can be appreciated by the locals and add to the cultural experience during your visit.
