On this self-drive tour you can discover some of Denmark`s most famous castles.
This self-drive tour will for 3 days take you to many of the most beautiful fairytale castles and palaces, and we will recommend you to stay in magnificent Danish castle- and manors hotels as well as cosy traditional hotels in Zealand and Funen.
Denmark is one of the three monarchies in the Nordic countries, and one of the oldest monarchies in the world, and today the monarch in Denmark is Queen Margrethe II. It`s possible to visit many of the old castles today because they are open to the public as museums.
The Royal tour starts in Copenhagen.
Day 1: Visit Castles in Copenhagen

Amalienborg Palace is the home residence of the royal family, and throughout the country, you will find more castles still in use by the royal family like Fredensborg Palace in North Zealand and Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus in Jutland.
Especially in Copenhagen, where kings have erected numerous magnificent buildings and monuments accompanied by tranquil green spaces for tourists to enjoy.
Get up close to the Danish crown jewels at the iconic Rosenborg Castle, and if the weather invites for it, why not take one of the many canal tours, passing along many royal highlights.

Day 2: North Zealand
North Zealand is an ancient playground of royalty, full of famous castles like Frederiksborg Palace & Garden, Fredensborg Palace & Garden and Kronborg Castle, home of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
We also recommend you to take a drive along the Danish Riviera. Experience the beautiful nature and pristine Danish beaches. Drive north along the coast road and stop off at picturesque seaside towns and fishing villages.

Day 3: Funen
Highlights:
Nyborg was the capital of Denmark in the Middle Age until around the year 1560.
The castle in Nyborg was first mentioned in written sources in 1193 when the Danish King Knud VI held the royal council there. The Medieval castle of Nyborg served as the home of the heirs to the throne. During the reign of King Frederik I, the State Council proposed that Nyborg be the capital city. His son, Christian III expanded the castle to double its original size.
After 1560 the Danish Kings preferred to live in Copenhagen, and the castle came to be used by the military. The castle's main building and powder magazine have been restored and are now an interesting museum.
Holckenhavn Castle is one of the most magnificent manor houses whose history can be traced all the way back to 1590.
At Funen, Egeskov Castle is the main attraction, and we recommend you to visit this special castle attraction on your 3-days castle tour.
After ending this tour, you can continue to other attractions in Jutland and Funen or go back to Zealand and Copenhagen.
