Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Take a day trip to the south coast and experience the waterfall of Seljalandsfoss.

Seljalandsfoss is a picturesque waterfall located on the south coast of Iceland, near the town of Hvolsvöllur. It is one of the country's most famous and unique waterfalls, known for its narrow stream that falls from a height of approximately 60 meters.

You can see Seljalandsfoss from the ring road long before you reach it, and it is a beautiful sight watching it getting closer and closer. In wintertime, it is lit up.

Walk behind the waterfall

What makes Seljalandsfoss particularly special is that visitors can walk behind the waterfall and experience the cascading water from a unique perspective. A path leads behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to view it from all angles and even take stunning photos from within the waterfall's mist.

Seljalandsfoss is fed by melting glacial water from the nearby Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010 and gained worldwide attention. The waterfall is part of the Seljalands River, which has its origins in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

A historical attraction

In addition to its natural beauty, Seljalandsfoss is also a site of cultural significance. The waterfall is mentioned in several Icelandic folktales and poems and is believed to be a place where elves and hidden people live.

Overall, Seljalandsfoss is a unique and stunning destination that offers a memorable experience for visitors. The ability to walk behind the waterfall and view it from all angles makes it one of Iceland's most iconic landmarks and a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to the south coast of the country.
