Aulanko was created by a rich romantic
The amazing Aulanko estate was created by Hugo Standertskjöld, an arms manufacturer, hospitable benefactor, skilled businessman and eccentric romantic. His magical heritage still lives in the amazing nature reserve, with its Swan Lake and Forest Lake, charming pavilions, fake islands, traditional plants and the fairytale-like Granite Castle.
The tall Aulanko Tower that resembles a castle tower is probably the most famous landmark in the park, overlooking a splendid view of the lakes, forests and beyond. Take the steps down from the tower to reach the Bear Cave and the shore.
Many artists, Alfred Hitchcock among them, have been enthralled by Aulanko over the years. The discreet charm of the 20th century bourgeoisie has gradually given room to wellness tourists and enthusiastic golf players who practice their swing in the valley of Vanajavesi, on the second oldest golf course in Finland.
Horses and riders were a familiar sight in Aulanko already in the early 20th century, and they can still be seen on the roads today. There is a horse stable and a riding school right next to Cumulus Resort Aulanko.
