The Åland Islands or Åland is an archipelago in the Baltic Sea consisting of 6,757 islands situated midway between Finland and Sweden.
The people of Åland speak Swedish, and the archipelago is an autonomous territory but a part of Finland, with its own parliament and flag.
Shipping, fisheries products, agriculture and tourism are significant sources of income. The islands are very flat and are therefore ideal for exploration by bike. The central island Åland is connected to other islands by bridges and cable ferry.
The Mariehamn is the capital of Åland, and here live around 29,000 citizens. It is a town with a strong maritime heritage, which you can explore the Maritime Museum called Sjöfartsmuseum.
In Mariehamn, you find Åland`s main port. Here the famous cruise ferries from Helsinki and Stockholm arrives. In the summer, Mariehamn suddenly changes to a popular holiday destination, regarding the many tourists who choose to stop at the Åland Islands.
