Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland. It is the fourth largest natural freshwater lake in Europe.
The landscapes around the lake are breathtaking, which makes kayaking routes suitable also for more inexperienced paddlers.
In summer you can take a cruise and enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Saimaa during a cruise or participate in one of the guided tours. In winter you can go ice fishing, skiing or ice skating.
One of the most favoured kayaking waters on the Saimaa is the Linnansaari National Park, with 130 islands covering more than a hectare in the area.
There are 21 guest harbours in Linnansaari, which means pit stops are never far away, where you can take a rest, a snack, or coffee prepared over open fire.
The main island of the national park, Linnansaari, is a nature reserve with practically no buildings on it. Nevertheless, the Sammakkoniemi campsite caters for all paddling travellers’ needs with accommodation, a small shop, and the obligatory sauna.
The Saimaa ringed seal is among the world’s most threatened seal species, and Linnansaari National Park is the best place in the world to spot one. It is recommended to book a few hours’ guided kayaking tours or maybe a more serious paddling for some days with a local guide if you wanna explore the wildlife here.
You can reach Lake Saimaa pretty easy both by car or train. Lappeenranta and Imatra are located only a couple of hours drive away from Helsinki.
