The Gota Canale Region
Get a unique impression about the idyllic heartland of Sweden by visiting the Göta Canal.
History
The construction of the Göta Canal took 22 years, beginning in 1810 by Baltzar von Platen. The idea of the canal was born out of anger by the heavy duties exacted by Denmark for using the Great Belt for shipping.
The Göta Canal is 190 km in length including 58 locks, and the canal stretches from Sjötorp on Lake Vänern to Mem on the Baltic. Göta Canal is the greatest construction project ever in Sweden. This remarkable waterway is one of the communication links between Sweden's two largest cities.
