The Pulpit Rock

One of the absolutely highlight attractions in Norway rising 604 metres above the Lysefjord.

The Pulpit Rock is a sheer cliff with a flat top that resembles a preacher’s pulpit. The plateau is approximately 25x25 metres. It is quite a walk or hike to reach this amazing attraction point of unlimited view of the Lysefjord and its surrounding mountains. 

 

How to hike to Pulpit Rock

One of the most popular hikes in Norway is the hike to Pulpit Rock. You get great views and relatively easy hiking nearby the town of Stavanger.

You can expect quite many tourists to visit this big attraction in the summer months. So we suggest starting your day early.

Best season to go to Pulpit Rock

It is possible to hike to Pulpit Rock year-round., but if you plan to do visit Pulpit Rock in the off-season which is from November through April you can see more information under "Related information" on this page.

The best season to hike the trail in Norway is from April to September, and it is not recommended in winter or early spring since snow and ice can make the track quite slippery. As this natural landmark is free of safety railings, hikers are urged to caution around the cliff edges.

You need 4-6 hours to walk the round trip from the lodge to Pulpit Rock. The trek has a difference in altitude of 330 meters. You have to be aware of the ground because you walk through wooded areas and over marshes and across harsh taluses and hard Lysefjord granite. Remember to wear sturdy shoes, warm clothes and to bring a packed lunch.

Many cruise tours and passenger ferries also pass beneath the Pulpit Rock year-round. 



Getting  there by car (all year)

To get to Pulpit Rock, you have several options. You can go by ferry from Stavanger to Tau or from Lauvvik to Oanes. From Tau and Oanes, there is only a short drive to the Pulpit Rock mountain lodge, where the marked track for the Pulpit Rock starts.

From Lauvvik: Drive to Lauvvik via Rv 13 National Tourist Route Ryfylke. From Lauvvik take the ferry to Oanes (8 minutes), and then you continue along with Rv 13 and then follow the signs to Preikestolen.

From Stavanger: Go by ferry from Stavanger to Tau (40 minutes). From here, drive south on Rv 13 and follow the signs. 



Getting there by public transport

By public transport from April to September (high season):

There is a ferry from Stavanger to Tay and here a corresponding bus to Preikestolen Fjellstue where the hike starts.


By public transport from October - March (low season):

Here you can take a ferry from Stavanger to Tau and from here a bus to Jørpeland. Then you have to take a taxi from Jørpeland to Preikestolen Moutain Lodge (9 kilometres).
