Visit one of the greatest natural attractions in Iceland - the Geysir Hot Spring area nearby Reykjavik.
There are three incredible geysers in the world, one in the U.S., one in New Zealand and the third one you find here in Iceland. It is natural to wonder and a 'must-see' attraction if you visit Iceland.
Geysir lies on the slopes of Laugarfjall Hill, which is also the home to the Strokkur geyser about 50 metres south. Eruptions at Geysir could hurl boiling water up to 60 to 80 metres in the air. However, eruptions suddenly stopped in 1916, and whether its silence is eternal or temporary, no one knows.
The nearby geyser Strokkur erupts frequently, and this geyser blasts a jet of heated water and steam into the air at heights up to 30 metres every 5-10 minutes. Strokkur´s activity has also been affected by earthquakes, although to a lesser extent than the great Geysir.
There are around thirty much smaller geysers and hot pools in the area, including one called Little Geysir, and the area became active more than 1000 years ago.
Descriptions of the Great Geysir and Strokkur have been given in every travel guide to Iceland published from the 18th century onwards. They are still one of the biggest highlights for tourists visiting Iceland.
The Geysir Center offers informative presentations and exhibitions.
On this tour, you get in touch with some of Iceland`s most beautiful and exciting natural phenomena. On most tours, you visit Gullfoss, known as the Golden Waterfall, Thingvellir National Park and Langjokull, the second-biggest glacier in Iceland.
