Hot Springs in Greenland

Greenland has numerous hot springs, but those on the island of Uunartoq are the most popular.

Here the water temperatures are between 37-38 degrees (98 -100 F) all year long and warm enough to bath in.

The definition of Hot Springs

A "Hot Spring" is a spring of naturally hot water of a temperature of 21 degrees (70 F), typically heated by volcanic activity.  But in Greenland, this is not the case. Here it appears that the water is heated by deep layers in the earth's crust rubbing against each other.

The springs were discovered 1000 years ago by the Norsemen.

Uunartoq - The best place to visit

There are several places with Hot Springs, both in the Disko Islands and in East Greenland, but the only place where the hot springs have been dammed up in South Greenland.

On an uninhabited island between Qaqortoq and Nanortalik lies the only heated outdoor spa in Greenland. These hot springs consist of 3 smaller springs that together make a giant tub. It is possible to visit the springs all year and in any weather because the water temperature is always suitable for soaking in this natural heated outdoor spa.
