The Arctic Cathedral in Tromsø, also known as 'Ishavskatedralen' was dedicated on November 19, 1965. The architecture is inspired by the angular shapes of the Arctic winter ice.
The Cathedral is composed of 11 immense triangles of white concrete and this representing the 11 apostles after the betrayal. Architect Jan Inge Hovig succeeded in creating a masterpiece. The cathedral is a landmark visible from the Tromsø Sound, the Tromsø Bridge and when landing in Tromsø by aircraft.
The aluminium-coated concrete panels on each side of the roof provide a huge stained-glass window forms the cathedral’s form and the entire east wall, and this is one of the largest in Europe and portraying the return of Christ. The interior lighting is positioned such that it lights the outside of the panels as well as the inside of the church, and this gives the church a special visual effect. The ground area of the main church hall is 900 square metres.
