The easiest way to discover Denmark is by self-drive tours. Because of the size, you can explore a lot within two or three days in Denmark. You will find local tour operators, car rental companies and local tourist offices to help you when you arrive.
Throughout Denmark, it is recommendable to follow the natural route called "Marguerite Route". By following this route, you will sure to see the beautiful nature in Denmark, from beautiful colourful fields, beautiful wood and hill landscape to wide sandy beaches. You can even drive on some of the beaches here on the West coast in Jutland.
Where to start
We recommended you to start your tour in Copenhagen. Use a day in Copenhagen on arrival to recover from the journey and just experience some of the capital`s biggest attractions as Tivoli and Nyhavn.
Kronborg "Hamlet" Castle
Day two you can drive along "Strandvejen" also called the Danish Riviera up to Kronborg "Hamlet" Castle in the city of Helsingør. This impressive castle is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, but also famous from Shakespeare`s Hamlet. It is recommended to buy a guided tour here.
If you are interested in maritime themes, the Maritime Museum of Denmark is located close to the castle.
In Helsingør it is recommendable to take a lunch break and taste the traditional Danish food products and visit one of the beautiful beaches and small fishing villages like Gilleleje or Hornbæk.
The Museum of National History
Before you go back to your hotel in Copenhagen, we recommend a detour to The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Palace in Hillerød. You can easily use two or three hours here to explore the palace, museum and the palace garden.
The museum inside the castle give you the best insights in the Danish monarchy. Impressive interior design, paintings, treasures and ballrooms are quite impressive. A guided tour is recommendable.
In the footsteps of H.C. Andersen in Odense
Do you have an extra day to spend in Denmark, Funen is an obvious choice.
To get to Funen you pass the Great Belt bridge (Storebæltsbroen). The bridge is an architectural masterpiece, and a stop before or after the bridge is a good option.
Without any stops, you can reach Odense from Copenhagen within 1,5 hours drive. When you arrive in Odense, you can see that Hans Chr. Andersen grew up here. Anywhere in the city, you will find indications about Andersen.
During the summer you will find many H.C. Andersen events in Odense, but there are some irresistible Andersen attractions you have to explore. By visiting the Hans Chr. Andersen Museum you get a perfect view of the world famous fairytale writer´s life and birthplace.
